Raquel (Madrid, Spain. March 1986)
Upon completion of my secondary education (High School degree in Arts), I took up a Fashion Design course at the Intituto Europeo di Design (IED). In my second year, I specialized in Accessories and Complements, and I was given the “best product idea” award.
During my last year at university, I was immersed in the world of shoes, and the theme of my thesis was the change of volumes and shapes using unusual fabrics. After I got my degree, I took up a handcrafted footwear course at the Shoe Museum in Elda, Alicante, where I studied the industry process of footwear pattern making techniques, sewing assembly, and finishing.
Before I started my thesis, producing shoes by hand seemed impossible. “How could anyone create something so amazing and complex using their hands only?” researched and absorbed every piece of information, trying to understand this extremely interesting world. The more I learned, the more fascinated I became with it and the more I wanted to continue learning. Therefore, after finishing my thesis, I continued doing research.
In the Shoe Museum, as I was putting my knowledge into practice, I fell in love with the idea of creating shoes: from the design to the final model. In Elda, I learned what it meant to have an idea in your head, as crazy as it may be, and make it real. It was, and it still is, a wonderful and rewarding experience: “Being able to give shape to your thoughts”.
I am currently working in a small workshop that I have set up in order to continue experimenting, evolving, and creating shoe designs.
Shoes are extremely important in our life. Whether you are rebel that goes against the latest fashion, or a fashion victim, or belong to an urban tribe, shoes are still important. They will be the ones with you and be with you along your life. The world of shoes has always seemed to me an amazing and wonderful place, and I believe there is still a lot of work we can do, there is room for innovation.
I would like to dedicate my life to SHOES, to continue doing research and seek for innovation. I would like to create some day new footwear concept.
